Heart-to-Heart: With Aurelia St Clair

Heart-to-Heart: With Aurelia St Clair

Bonnie Kelly |

We’ve been collaborating with Aurelia St Clair for a while now and it was her previous apartment in Richmond that first caught our eye a couple of years ago. We fell in love with Aurelia’s unique sense of style and were also really impressed by how creatively she used the small spaces she was working with.

Aurelia and her wife Tamara now live in a stunning sun-filled apartment in the west of Melbourne. It’s full of colour, trinkets from her travels, vintage prints, a Pinterest-inspired basketball wall, stunning views of the city and a VERY clever use of space.

Her beloved dog Kenzo very excitedly greeted me at the door, Solange was softly playing in the background and I was blown away by the beauty of this apartment when I stepped inside. Every single thing in this home has been selected wisely… even down to the strawberry shaped toilet brush.

We hope you enjoy this chat with Aurelia about all things interiors, dreams for 2025, apartment living and getting to know the style icon that is, Aurelia St Clair.

Oh hey Aurelia! Tell us about yourself - who are you and what do you do?

I'm a comedian, content creator and podcaster. I live in Footscray with my wife and dog :)

How would you describe your taste in interiors and how was this style shaped and influenced over your life?

My taste in interiors was shaped by my love for magazines and Tumblr as a teen (I miss Tumblr to this day), but Instagram and Pinterest are where I look for inspiration now. I've always gravitated towards colour and patterns when dressing and this is definitely reflected in the apartment decor as well. I'm inspired by Mid Century Modern homes and love colourful maximalist vibes. Whenever we travel I look for knick knacks and trinkets or small rugs or throws I can bring home. I try to work within the confines of my budget and apartment layout to bring warmth and colour into our home.

Your apartment styling game is 10/10! What’s your styling advice for people living in units or apartments?

- Use rugs to define areas in your apartment! Having a different rug for my dining area and living area makes me feel like the room is larger than it is. Rugs are also great if you have an ugly or worn out carpet you want to hide.

-Go big with your artwork! I used to only purchase smaller prints for my gallery wall because I thought I didn't have the space, but having 1-3 large pieces (A3 or above) balances it all out. It sounds counterintuitive but small prints make the space feel smaller.

What is your very favourite piece of furniture or decor that you own?

Probably our couch, because it's where we lounge and relax at the end of the day. My favourite DIY is an adhesive wallpaper I got from etsy to transform the boring white sliding doors wardrobe doors. You can find it here.

What’s on the cards for you personally and professionally in 2025? Tell us your hopes and dreams for the new year ahead.

Last year I quit my corporate job to focus on freelancing and combat burn out. This year I'm hoping to continue working with some amazing clients and solidify my routines, create some funny & engaging content and grow my account so I can afford to renovate our kitchen.

You’re a host of two amazing podcasts (Popgays & Radio Aurelia Podcast), tell us about them pretty please. What can we expect when tuning in to these?

Popgays is a pop culture gossip podcast where we discuss news across music, film, TV and queer culture. I'm currently working on launching Radio Aurelia again - stay tuned!

Being an expert in this space... we’d love to know what your all-time favourite podcasts are and why?

I love the Wondery Podcast network's shows because they're great at uncovering stories across multiple episodes. I listen to Scamfluencers (a podcast about influencers who are also scammers) regularly and also enjoyed the Dr. Death series. In case you couldn't tell already - true crime is my jam when it comes to podcasts!

As a creative, comedian and podcast host you are constantly opening yourself up to criticism and opinions daily. In other words, we think you’re really brave. Do you have any advice for people in the same field as you (or in any occupation) struggling with the pressure of this?

It's still hard to open myself up to criticism and people's opinions. I'm a pretty sensitive person and need a lot of alone time to decompress. I like to go on walks or exercise to release built up tension, and catch up with friends working in the same field so we can vent to each other. Sometimes the best thing is actually blocking, deleting and moving on.

Describe your perfect day out in Melbourne to us)…

Sleep in, walk to Two Men Cafe in Footscray for coffee and bahn mi from Nhu Lan. Drive to some op shops or Mill Market to look for cute home finds with my wife. End the day with a movie at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville and fro-yo at Goje.

What’s currently on your Sage x Clare wish-list?

I'm currently obsessed with striped bedding, so the Bundi Sheet Set is on my wish list.
