L.O.V.E

After the celebration (or lack of celebration at my house!) of the universal day of love, I thought this blog post was an appropriate one. The other day I discovered a postcard I had completely forgotten about… a memento I brought home from a Sage x Clare scouting trip in Morocco many moons ago. Not just any postcard but a love postcard from the Marjorelle Garden located in Marrakech.

The botanical twelve acre garden was designed by the expatriate French artist Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and 1930s, which will probably mean nothing to you but a fun fact all the same! What is so special about this place is that couturier and fashion revolutionary, Yves Saint Laurent, and his partner, Pierre Bergé, owned the entire property from the 1980’s. The place so significant to the couple that when the great Yves Saint Laurent passed away in 2008 his ashes were scattered there.

Today the gardens are open to the public and house an Islamic Art museum which includes a permanent collection of YSL’s Love Posters. The posters are reproductions of the New Year cards that he designed and sent out to friends and clients every year between 1970 and 2000 with those four globally recognised letters L.O.V.E. As well as the word love, each card features the year and signature of the late fashion designer amongst art deco snakes, colourful Matisse-inspired collages, portraits of his beloved French Bulldog, Moujik, or a pair of love birds. I’m kicking myself now that I only brought one home, as they are not the easiest things to purchase from Australia and who knows when I will return! If you are so lucky to visit this colourful and authentic city Yves Saint Laurent’s Le Jardin Majorelle is a must! xx
